Some start with casual use of drugs or alcohol and gradually cross the line into addiction. Others may fall into dependency during difficult life phases or from a young age. Most people dealing with addiction use substances to suppress emotional pain or unresolved trauma.<\/p>\n<p>The digital revolution has introduced new types of behavioural addiction \u2013 such as social media, online gambling, gaming, and pornography. These emerging challenges have created a growing demand for professionals trained specifically in addiction care. Addiction counsellors can play a very important role in addressing addiction. They can support people both in the process of getting clean, and in rebuilding a valuable and meaningful life during recovery.<\/p>\n<h2>About the Addiction and Recovery Coaching and Counselling training programme<\/h2>\n<p>Our Addiction and Recovery Coaching and Counselling programme is a comprehensive specialisation programme designed to train professionals to support individuals and families affected by addiction.<\/p>\n<p>Given the complexity of addiction and recovery, it\u2019s essential that practitioners develop deep knowledge, practical skills, and personal insight in this field. This programme is therefore only offered as a specialisation for people who are already trained coaches\/counsellors.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of the training programme, you will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Learn the full scope of addiction and recovery counselling.<\/li>\n<li>Gain practical tools and evidence-based methods.<\/li>\n<li>Grow personally and professionally to work confidently in the field.<\/li>\n<li>Learn how to confidently position yourself in the addiction recovery market \u2013 whether you choose to build your own practice or work within a clinic setting.<\/li>\n<li>Learn to professionally intervene in disruptions in the counselling process and apply various attitudes and techniques.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Personal development as a core element<\/h2>\n<p>Working in addiction care requires more than just skills \u2013 it requires self-awareness and emotional resilience. Throughout the programme, you will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Explore your own relationship to the field.<\/li>\n<li>Alternate between the roles of counsellor and client in exercises.<\/li>\n<li>Reflect deeply through a personal learning portfolio.<\/li>\n<li>Participate in peer learning, intervision and supervision.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Content of the programme<\/h2>\n<p>The programme Addiction and Recovery Coaching and Counselling focuses on six core themes: 1) working with people who struggle with all sorts of addiction, 2) family coaching in addiction, 3) recovery coaching, 4) interventions as a tool, 5) psychological disorders, trauma and loss and 6) positioning yourself as a professional coach\/counsellor. These topics will be explained below.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Introduction to addiction coaching and counselling<br \/>\n<\/strong>This module offers an introduction to the complex topic of addiction, focusing on both the theoretical and practical sides of counselling people who are struggling with addiction. You will gain knowledge of all kinds of addictions, the underlying causes, the neurological and physical impact and how addiction affects the entire system around the addicted person. You will also learn methodologies you can apply when working with addiction problems.<\/li>\n<li><strong> Family coaching in addiction<br \/>\n<\/strong>Addiction is often referred to as a family illness due to its impact on the people who are close to the addicted person. You\u2019ll learn how to support families during all phases of addiction and recovery \u2013 both when encouraging treatment and during post-detox reintegration. Key areas include: communication within families, addressing co-dependency and unhealthy patterns, educating relatives about addiction.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Recovery coaching<br \/>\n<\/strong>This module prepares you to guide individuals through the challenges of rebuilding life after addiction. You\u2019ll support clients in restoring relationships, managing health, and regaining structure in work and daily life.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Interventions<br \/>\n<\/strong>You will learn how to carry out professional interventions, using models like Arise, Johnson, and CRAFT, to motivate individuals to seek clinical treatment. This intensive process includes guiding both the addict and their family.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Psychological disorders, trauma and loss<br \/>\n<\/strong>Dual diagnosis (addiction and co-occurring mental disorders) is common. Although as a coach\/counsellor you cannot diagnose or treat mental illnesses, it&#8217;s crucial to understand mental health conditions and the characteristics of mental disorders, the effects of trauma and grief, long-term consequences of addiction and when and how to refer clients appropriately.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Positioning yourself as an addiction coach\/counsellor<br \/>\n<\/strong>In this practical module, you\u2019ll learn how to confidently position yourself as a skilled and trustworthy addiction coach or counsellor. Whether you dream of starting your own private practice or working in a rehabilitation clinic.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>What is the purpose of the programme?<\/h2>\n<p>The programme prepares you to work as an addiction and recovery coach\/counsellor. By the end of the programme, you will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Understand the many faces of addiction.<\/li>\n<li>Know how to support both addicts and their networks.<\/li>\n<li>Have the proper tools to guide recovery processes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Career opportunities<\/h2>\n<p>After completing the programme Addiction and Recovery Coaching and Counselling, you can start your own practice as an addiction coach\/counsellor and\/or recovery coach. You will be able to support individuals struggling with addiction \u2013 as well as those around them \u2013 throughout the full process of withdrawal and recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Several of our graduates are currently employed in addiction clinics. With our diploma, it is certainly possible to work in a clinic or safe house. Whether you are hired ultimately depends on the clinic itself, as each organisation has its own policies and preferences.<\/p>\n<p>Addiction clinics employ various types of professionals, such as addiction physicians, psychologists, social workers, lived-experience practitioners and counsellors. It is important to note that counsellors who work within clinics are not usually eligible for reimbursement by health insurers. Whether a clinic hires counsellors can therefore also depend on its reimbursement policy.<\/p>\n<p>Completing this training programme therefore does not automatically make you reimbursable (by health insurers) within a clinical setting, but in practice we see that several clinics are keen to collaborate with our graduates.<\/p>\n<h2>Who is this programme for?<\/h2>\n<p>This course is ideal for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Professionals already working in (mental) health care.<\/li>\n<li>Coaches and counsellors seeking to learn more about addiction.<\/li>\n<li>Individuals who have personal experience with addiction (you must be in active recovery).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Admission requirements<\/h2>\n<p>There are two admission requirements for this specialisation programme:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Minimum of Secondary Vocational Education (Dutch MBO level 4) and\/or sufficient life experience and motivation.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/preview.counselling.nl\/en\/admission-to-our-training-programmes-without-the-right-pre-education\/\">Click here<\/a>\u00a0for the possibilities if you do not meet this requirement.<\/li>\n<li>Graduates of <a href=\"\/en\/trainings\/coaching-and-counselling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coaching and Counselling Year 1<\/a> (and\/or <a href=\"\/en\/trainings\/coaching-and-counselling-english-year-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Year 2<\/a>) can be admitted to this specialisation programme. Please <a href=\"https:\/\/preview.counselling.nl\/en\/contact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contact<\/a> us for the possibilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Programme structure<\/h2>\n<p>This training programme includes 15 training days and 8 online sessions:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Module 1: Introduction to addiction counselling \u2013 Understanding addiction (3 days)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Definition, causes and mechanisms of addiction.<\/li>\n<li>Psychological and neurological effects, characteristics of addiction.<\/li>\n<li>Role of the addiction coach.<\/li>\n<li>Overview of care systems and interdisciplinary collaboration.<\/li>\n<li>The Minnesota Model and other models.<\/li>\n<li>Coaching methodologies in addiction counselling (e.g. motivational interviewing, self-esteem model).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Module 2: Family coaching in addiction (3 days)<\/strong><br \/>\nAddiction is often seen as a family disease, as the entire system is affected. In this module you learn how to support families and significant others of people with addictions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Supporting the family in dealing with the addicted person.<\/li>\n<li>Providing psychoeducation about (the various forms of) addiction (substances, behaviour, process).<\/li>\n<li>Individual guidance of family members (breaking co-dependency, acknowledging one\u2019s own addiction, and exploring personal needs and boundaries).<\/li>\n<li>Facilitating systemic family conversations.<\/li>\n<li>Attachment issues, trauma, loss, co-dependency and system dynamics.<\/li>\n<li>Themes: family systems and their dynamics; the system as a source of strength; the system as a trigger; enabling systems to grow; individual growth pathways.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Module 3: Recovery (5 days)<\/strong><br \/>\nAfter detoxification, the recovery phase begins. In this module you learn how to support people in recovery in rebuilding a meaningful life and maintaining abstinence.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Guiding individuals post-detox into stable, meaningful lives in the domains: health, purpose, relationships, finances.<\/li>\n<li>Applying different coaching attitudes and techniques and intervening professionally when disruptions occur in the guidance process.<\/li>\n<li>Using methodologies from positive psychology.<\/li>\n<li>The social map of the care and support landscape.<\/li>\n<li>The role of trauma in addiction and stimulating post-traumatic growth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Module 4: Interventions (3 days)<\/strong><br \/>\nTo motivate someone to participate in a residential detoxification or rehabilitation programme, an intervention may be required. In this module you learn about the different options and how to prepare and carry out an intervention.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Planning and delivering interventions (e.g. working with the models: ARISE, Johnson, CRAFT).<\/li>\n<li>Social map (addiction services, mental health institutions, health insurers).<\/li>\n<li>Analysis of substance use and history.<\/li>\n<li>Conflict management and family readiness.<\/li>\n<li>Transferring clients to clinical settings (referrals and logistics).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Module 5: Professional practice (1 day)<\/strong><br \/>\nIn this module you learn how to position yourself in the market as an addiction and recovery coach\/counsellor, whether in private practice or working within a clinic.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Setting up your own practice \u2013 business plan, marketing, administration.<\/li>\n<li>Working in a rehab clinic \u2013 understand the expectations and professional standards within clinical environments.<\/li>\n<li>Personal branding and positioning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Online Module: Mental disorders, grief and trauma (8 online sessions of 2 hours)<\/strong><br \/>\nMany people with an addiction also have another mental disorder, known as a dual diagnosis. In this module you gain knowledge about mental disorders.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Recognising mental disorders, dual diagnoses and DSM-5 principles.<\/li>\n<li>Long-term consequences of addiction (residual damage).<\/li>\n<li>The effects of addiction on the environment.<\/li>\n<li>Recognition, education, rehabilitation (supportive tools, resources and training) and referral.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Entry requirements<\/h2>\n<p>To ensure that the training programme is a good fit, all applicants must complete a 45-minute intake interview. This will assess:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your motivation and readiness for the course.<\/li>\n<li>Your ability to support future clients effectively.<\/li>\n<li>Any prior experience or relevant education.<\/li>\n<li>If you have any personal experience with addiction, and if so, whether your recovery process is stable enough to start the programme.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019ve already completed <strong>Coaching and Counselling Year 1<\/strong> (and\/or <strong>Year 2<\/strong>), you\u2019ll still be required to complete the interview for entry into the specialisation.<\/p>\n<h2>Ready to support change?<\/h2>\n<p>This programme will equip you with the tools, knowledge and personal insight to work meaningfully in one of society\u2019s most urgent care sectors. The class schedule is published on our website approximately six months prior to the start of each programme. Would you like to be notified when new schedules are released? Please complete our <a href=\"https:\/\/preview.counselling.nl\/en\/contact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contact form<\/a>, and we will email you as soon as the class schedules are available online.<\/p>\n<h2>Number of participants<\/h2>\n<p>The average group size of the programme is 12 participants, with a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 16. As soon as we have sufficient applicants (at the latest 2 weeks before the start of the course) we will confirm the start. In case of too little students, or if a course is full, we will always try to find a solution, for example by postponing the start date a little or by creating a new group (if possible).<\/p>\n<h2>Attendance requirements<\/h2>\n<p>Students are required to attend at least 90% of classes to be able to receive a diploma. We expect you to be available on all dates on the class schedule and to follow the lessons in your own group. In principle, it is not allowed to catch up on a class day in another group, in order to guarantee group dynamics.<\/p>\n<p>Only in very exceptional circumstances, mainly when the attendance requirement of 90% is compromised, can a class day be followed in another group.
